Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I apply for service-connected disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs?

A: Monetary benefits are paid to veterans who are disabled by disease or injury incurred or aggravated during military service and in the line of duty. For disabilities not related to one's service, benefits are called "VA improved pensions" or Disability Pensions. Application for either benefit should be filed on a VA form 21-256, available through this office or by calling the VA at 1-800-827-1000. To access their web site, click here . The address is the Department of Veterans Affairs, JFK Federal Building, Boston, MA. 02203. The VA is a federal agency.

Q: As a veteran, I understand I will be allowed a free burial plot in either of the state veterans' cemeteries located in Agawam and Winchendon. Is my spouse entitled to be buried there as well?

A: Yes, although there is a charge of $300.00 for full casket or $150.00 for cremain burial (subject to change) for a spouse, widow/widower who has not remarried and qualified dependents.

To be eligible, veterans must either have entered the service from Massachusetts or have lived in Massachusetts for at least 5 consecutive years after discharge.

Q: Does the VA home loan program provide money and lower interest rates for veterans?

A: No. While the VA guarantees the lender part of the loan against loss if a veteran defaults, there is no financial entitlement and the interest rate is set by the bank as well.

Q: I have been laid off at work and have expended my unemployment benefits. I have been unable to find another job. As a veteran, what help is available to me?

A: Massachusetts is the only state in the union provides veterans and their families in need of financial assistance in times of emergency. Called Chapter 115 benefits, the law provides help with food, shelter and employment assistance. For Veterans and their familes in Greenfield and Leyden, call Charles Loven, Veterans' Director and Service Officer at 413-772-1571, 14 Court Square, Greenfield, MA. 01301.
