MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE:    3/17/10
CONTACTS: Sandra Shields, Director

Weather permitting; the Town of Greenfield will begin street sweeping Monday, 3/22/10.  The $37,000 contract this year has been awarded to BDM Sweeping of Keene, NH.
The parking lots and downtown will be swept at night.  The remainder of the sweeping will be done during the daytime.
There is a significant difference in the program this year.  Due to the 9C cuts that took place approximately a year ago the sweeping budget was cut from $65,000 to $37,000 which means the whole town can not be swept in the spring. The DPW has developed a biennial sweeping program whereby the densely populated center of the town will be sweep every year and the outlaying areas will be swept every other year.  The other consideration in this decision is that the town currently uses much less road sand during the winter with it pretreatment program than it has in the past.  For example, in FY08 6,386 tons of sand was used for winter operations.  This winter, only 1,594 tons were used, a 75% reduction.
This spring, in addition to the central section of town, the areas east of RT 91 and south of the Rt2 bypass will be done.  Next year, the central section will be done and the areas to the west and north not done this year will be swept while the more southerly and easterly outlaying areas will not be swept.
In addition to the spring sweeping, the downtown business district will be swept approximately every 3 weeks.  Business owners in the downtown are reminded that it is their responsibility to sweep and keep their sidewalks clean.  Litter should be picked up and not swept into the street. Because sweeping is only done every three weeks, litter swept into the street accumulates and becomes very unsightly.
Residents are requested to observe the tips below to facilitate the operation:
  • Avoid parking on the street during daylight hours until after your street is swept.
  • Do not sweep sand into piles; the sweeper can do a better job if the sand is not consolidated.
  • Do not rake grass, leaves or branches into the street.  This can be raked up and brought to the Transfer Station at no cost.
