SCREENING OPERATION TO SAVE TOWN APPROXIMATELY $80,000

Greenfield, MA – On 7/28/10 Mitchell Excavating began screening material for the Town that will yield approximately 3000 yards of high quality loam that will supply the DPW with enough loam for the next 8-10 yrs.  The Department uses loam to repair tree belts, trenches, work in the parks and numerous other uses.  The cost of the operation is $7000 and will take 4-5 days.  If this quantity of loam had to purchased it would cost the Town $75,000 to $90,000.

The material being screened is a collection of material the DPW has been stockpiling.  It includes the composted leaf and yard wastes that residents bring to the Transfer Station as well as sod, dirt, etc. from Town excavation projects.  Screening the material improves quality by removing branches, stones and any other debris in the stockpiles.  It also serves to blend the product so it has consistent characteristics.

Marlo Warner:
“We are very pleased with how the operation is going.  It is an excellent example of reuse and recycling.  Yard wastes are converted into a highly desirable product that will save the Town a great deal of money and be ideal for our uses”.
